A fine and unusual pair of early 20th century ladies’ boots in a vivid arsenic green silk satin, retaining a strong and remarkably fresh colour for the period.

By Rayne of London, one of the most respected English makers of fashionable footwear, known for supplying high-quality, often bespoke boots to a well-dressed clientele. The present pair are of classic high form, with front lacing and a full run of original metal eyelets and buttons, one boot retaining its tasselled fastening.

The silk has softened with age, now with a gentle slouch through the ankle and natural wear to the surface, entirely in keeping with genuine use. The heels are modest and shaped, with leather soles.

Such boldly coloured silk boots were typically intended for indoor or formal wear, and the striking arsenic green — a tone closely associated with late 19th century taste — gives the pair a particularly strong decorative quality.

Height 31 cm; length 25 cm.

Condition:

Overall wear consistent with age and use. Some shattering evident to the lining. Thinning to the green silk in areas of friction, though stable. Rubbing and creasing to the silk, particularly at the toes and ankle. General wear to soles and heels. One tassel lacking. Structurally sound and display well.
