This elegant Chinese silk bed cover, produced for the export market in the late 19th century, is worked in lustrous purple silk and richly embellished with fine embroidery. The surface is densely decorated with scrolling floral vines interspersed with auspicious birds, rendered in delicate polychrome silk threads and metallic accents. At the center is a circular medallion enclosing a bird amid blossoms, framed by further floral sprays that animate the field and corners.

The wide embroidered border enhances the composition and is finished with a deep silk fringe on all sides, emphasizing the luxurious and ceremonial character of the textile. The refined workmanship, harmonious color palette, and use of symbolic motifs reflect the high level of skill achieved by Chinese embroiderers catering to Western taste during the late Qing dynasty. Intended as a bed cover but equally suited for decorative display, this piece exemplifies the sophistication and artistry of Chinese export silks of the 19th century.

Condition:

Overall good condition, with some light staining consistent with age and use. There are areas where the silk has thinned and will require reinforcement, but the embroidery remains largely intact and visually strong
