Terrier with Sugar Lump – Attributed to Karin Stackelberg (1877–1957)
Oil on canvas, framed in Swedish giltwood frame.
A beautifully observed portrait of a terrier, captured mid-trick as it patiently balances a sugar lump on its nose — a quiet moment of trust and training. The dog’s expression, composed yet alert, suggests familiarity and affection rather than formality.
The collar is inscribed Stackelberg, in a script closely matching Karin Stackelberg’s known signature — perhaps a subtle signature, or a clue that this was a beloved family pet. Stackelberg, a Swedish modernist trained in Paris, Munich, and London, was known for her sensitive, personal works.
The painting is executed on canvas from Savary & Cie. in Paris and framed in an ornate giltwood frame by Stockholm gilder Aug. Anderson — both elements reflecting Stackelberg’s cross-European artistic life.
A quietly whimsical and affectionate portrait, full of charm, character, and painterly restraint.
