A charming English oil on board portrait of a Jack Russell Terrier, circa 1900, in the manner of British sporting and animal painter Colin Graeme (1858–1910).

Shown in profile against a rich, dark ground, the dog has the characteristic white coat with black and tan markings. The close composition and sensitive treatment of the animal recall the canine portraits of Colin Graeme, who was particularly known for his paintings of dogs and sporting subjects.

The portrait is housed in a particularly attractive 19th-century Victorian scumble-painted frame, with a warm simulated wood grain finish and wonderfully aged surface. The frame is believed to pre-date the painting.

A highly decorative piece of English canine portraiture with considerable country-house appeal.

Oil on board.

Overall dimensions: 36 cm high × 32 cm wide.

Condition: Good decorative antique condition, with age-related wear, marks and surface imperfections consistent with age.
