A wonderfully decorative late 19th / early 20th century three-fold screen, painted with nine individual maritime folk art scenes.
Each panel depicts a different nautical subject, including sailing ships, smaller vessels, coastal buildings, anchors, fish, birds and flowers, painted against deep blue-green grounds and surrounded by decorative gilt borders. The studded construction and wonderfully timeworn surface add enormously to its character.
A particularly striking decorative piece that could be used traditionally as a folding screen or hung flat on a wall as a large scale work of folk art.
One panel has cracking to the leather, with age-related marks, wear and losses throughout. Despite this, it displays extremely well and the wear is entirely in keeping with the character of the piece.
