An early 19th-century map of Norfolk by C. Smith, printed at 172 Strand, London.

Entitled ‘A New Map of the County of Norfolk, Divided into Hundreds’, the map was first issued on 6 January 1804, this being the second edition corrected to 1808.

With original hand colouring, the county is shown in considerable detail, including towns and villages, roads, estates, waterways and the Norfolk coastline. A reference below lists the county’s 33 Hundreds.

The map is particularly striking for its unusual ebonised tramp art frame, with layered and notched wooden decoration, projecting corners and applied metal rosettes throughout.

The map retains its original fold lines and has some age-related marking and discolouration, all consistent with its age.

Overall dimensions: approximately 67cm x 60cm.

Map dated 1804, second edition corrected to 1808.
