A wonderfully characterful set of four glazed earthenware garden gnomes by Philipp Griebel of Gräfenroda, Thuringia, Germany, circa 1930.
Each individually modelled figure depicts a different character: a seated fisherman complete with rod and catch, a gardener leaning upon his spade, a figure carrying an axe, and a particularly charming figure holding a large black ball.
Beautifully modelled with expressive faces, pointed red hats and richly coloured clothing, each figure stands or sits upon a naturalistically moulded base.
Philipp Griebel was one of the historic manufacturers of garden gnomes in Gräfenroda, the Thuringian town renowned for its long tradition of gnome production.
A wonderfully eccentric and decorative group, equally appealing displayed indoors as decorative objects or in a garden setting. Particularly charming displayed together as a collection.
Circa 1930.
Approximately 40 cm high.
Unmarked.
In very good condition for their age, with only minor areas of glaze loss and surface wear consistent with age and use.
