A decorative 20th century Chinese doctor’s lady, modelled after the traditional ivory figures historically used by physicians when examining female patients. During periods when modesty prevented women from discussing intimate medical concerns, these figures allowed patients to discreetly indicate the location of their symptoms, preserving privacy while aiding diagnosis.
This well-executed example is crafted from a cream-coloured resin or composite material with finely modelled features and retains its original carved hardwood daybed. The figure is adorned with decorative jewellery, adding to its visual appeal, and together the two pieces make an unusual and highly decorative display.
